Q&A with Coplin Health Systems’ Newest Licensed Professional Counselor, Nancy Creighton, MA, LPC
Coplin Health Systems is pleased to welcome our newest licensed professional counselor, Nancy Creighton, MA, LPC, to the Coplin Health Systems team. Nancy is excited to provide behavioral health services to patients of all ages and backgrounds.
We sat down with Nancy to discover what led her to become a professional counselor and what she looks forward to in her new role with Coplin Health Systems.
Question: What drove you to choose this career path?
Nancy Creighton: A few different experiences guided me toward behavioral health. As a teen, I struggled with anxiety and depression, which impacted my transition to college. I wish I’d had access to therapy while in school. Later, I worked with the American Red Cross responding to tornadoes in Texas and was deeply impressed by the impact of the behavioral health team on the individuals affected by the tornadoes. These experiences drove me to wanting to help others.
Q: If you could give one piece of advice, what would it be?
NC: Value quality sleep! So many stressful situations can have a larger impact on when a person has not been sleeping properly.
Q: What is the most enjoyable part of your job?
NC: I love getting to know the unique identities of each community and school I get to work with. I’m always open to learning how that plays into support systems.
Q: When not at Coplin, what do you enjoy doing?
NC: I like light hiking, thrifting, and photography. I’m big on day trips and finding small towns to check out.
Q: What are your professional goals and interests?
NC: I lean toward issues common among adolescents and young adults. Whether it is anxiety, depression, or any of the stress or trauma-related challenges, I find it rewarding to help young people start their adult lives with the best support possible.
Q: What might surprise people to know about you?
NC: I dropped out of college a few times before completing my degree. It was a sore spot for me for a long time, but I’ve actually come out to value that stage of my life. Having a personal experience with struggling while transitioning from high school to college opened my mind to the similar struggles that many others face or have faced.
Q: Tell us a little bit about you personally.
NC: I try to attend at least one Columbus Blue Jackets game each year. I discovered as an adult how impressive hockey is to watch and I love rooting for an underdog.
I have two cats to keep me on my toes (Uno and Adora). I also grew up in a small town in Ohio, where there were only 60 people in my graduating class. That experience helps me understand the joys (and sometimes challenges) of going to school in rural areas and helps me connect with my patients.
