Q&A with Coplin Health Systems’ Newest Psychotherapist Rachael Y. Jarvis, MSW, LICSW

At Coplin Health Systems, we believe in connecting with our providers on a personal level. This week, we sat down with Rachael Y. Jarvis, MSW, LICSW, one of our dedicated psychotherapists who works at Wirt County Family Care and Wirt County Schools Wellness Center, to learn more about her life, experiences, and approach to care.

Q: What types of services do you offer at Coplin Health Systems?

Rachel Jarvis: I provide psychotherapy to adults with mental health diagnoses, as well as individuals experiencing substance use disorders (SUDs) or both. I specialize in individual and group therapy.

Q: What drove you to choose this career path?

RJ: I watched my dad work as a clinical social worker, and it inspired me to follow in his footsteps. I enjoy problem-solving alongside my patients and working through their situations together.

Q: What do you do beyond what most people see?

RJ: I enjoy baking, cooking, cake decorating, and being crafty. It’s a creative outlet that I find very therapeutic.

Q: If you could give one piece of health advice, what would it be?

RJ: Everyone has strengths and weaknesses. Be honest with yourself, and don’t be afraid to explore both!

Q: What’s a common misconception about your job?

RJ: That we have a magic wand! Therapy is a process, and while it may seem like we can fix everything quickly, real change takes time and effort.

Q: What’s the most enjoyable part of your job?

RJ: Seeing people heal and forming relationships with others is incredibly rewarding for me. Forming relationships with people is what truly drives me, though. Every connection I make enriches my practice and helps me understand my patients on a deeper level.

Q: When not at Coplin, what do you enjoy doing?

RJ: I enjoy spending time at home on our farm, watching TV, going to church, and spending quality time with my husband and son.

Q: What might surprise people to know about you?

RJ: I have traveled to many countries and lived in Africa for 2½ years when I was younger.

Q: What community or volunteer activities do you participate in?

RJ: I’m a Cub Scout den leader and actively participate in our church. It’s fulfilling to be able to guide young minds and serve the community.

Q: What are your professional interests?

RJ: I’m passionate about healthy eating and cooking. I believe that wellness starts with what we put into our bodies, and I try to incorporate that into my therapy work whenever I can.

Q: One fun fact about yourself?

RJ: I love singing karaoke! But despite that, I’m not a night owl or a morning person—I just really like sleep.

Q: Tell us about your family and personal life.

RJ: I’ve been married for 17 years, and we have one son. We live on a small farm with dogs, cats, sheep, pigs, chickens, and even a turtle! I’ve been a therapist for almost 20 years, and outside of work, my family and farm life keep me grounded.

This Q&A offers a window into Rachael’s personality and the work she does at Coplin Health Systems. Stay tuned for more provider spotlights, as we continue to introduce the amazing people behind our care.
