Tell us about yourself.
My family is very small, so I would love to tell all the names of my animals, but that would take a few pages! I grew up in Ripley and graduated from Ripley High School where I was a Vikings cheerleader. I attended college and medical school here in WV. However, I completed my residency in Internal Medicine in Savannah, Georgia, which was a great program.
During my time in the south, I moved across the river and started my own office near Hilton Head in South Carolina, which was a great experience. I decided to return to West Virginia to be closer to my parents and am happy to be home. I decided to finally get a farm and do rescue, as I have always been active with the Humane Society. I have found donkeys to be incredibly sweet and intelligent, they are amazing animals. Mules are a close second. So, I find myself learning as much as I can with training and keeping mules.
What drove you to choose this career path?
I followed my father who was a surgeon in the area. I enjoyed his contact with the community and the joy he had practicing medicine. As a family and growing up in Jackson County, I got to know the community as well and felt that becoming a physician would be my best way to serve the people of Jackson County. I truly enjoy practicing medicine, but the best part is the patients. The people in this area are wonderful, kind people, interested in their health and maintaining the highest level of health possible.
If you could give one piece of health advice, what would it be?
Living a healthy lifestyle is the best way to maintain health holistically. This includes emphasis on wellness of mind, body and spirit. All are important in maintaining a healthy life.
What is the most enjoyable part of your job?
Interacting with people.
When not at Coplin, what do you enjoy doing?
I have a small farm that is a rescue for unwanted, abused or neglected animals, mostly equine. I have several mules, horses and donkeys. I also have several cats that have been dropped on my property. I truly enjoy farm life and love interacting with the animals. I get great joy watching
a depressed, neglected animal or one that has been through the horrors of slaughter pens, become happy, healthy and trusting. The animals give so much back in love and gratification. I cannot imagine life without them.
What might surprise people to know about you?
I love to work on the farm. Which means mud up to my knees, working with the animals, breaking ice on the pond, and anything necessary to maintain a farm.
What community or volunteer activities do you participate in?
Due to the nature of the farm, most of my time is spent working the farm and with the animals.
Professional Interests?
I was trained in Internal Medicine. The focus is mainly on adult health and diseases. My main interest is educating and helping people learn to maintain a healthy lifestyle so as to prevent illness. Many diseases are preventable, and when patients realize how easy it is to live a healthier lifestyle and they can prevent certain diseases, I feel like I have done my best job as a physician.
One fun fact about yourself?
I really love mules. And I fall in the mud frequently! On the farm, that takes on a whole different meaning.
What do you love (or look forward to) the most about your job?
Getting to know my patients better.
